Start of new MD-CBL course

After more than two years of development, we’ve officially launched our brand new Multidisciplinary Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) course!

This week marked the kick-off lectures for 25 unique projects, each centered around a real-world design or research challenge. What makes this course so exciting is its scale and its multidisciplinarity:

🧑‍🎓 1850 students, all 2nd-year Bachelor students across all majors are participating 🤝 Multidisciplinary teams of 5 or 6 students, each bringing their unique background and expertise 🧠 25 different challenges, ranging from design challenges to open-ended research projects 🌍 Sustainability is the overarching theme tying all projects together

This course is not just about solving problems—it’s about learning to work together across disciplines on real-life challenges. The projects will be concluded with final presentations in June, where students will share the solutions and outcomes of their projects.

A big thank you to my colleagues in the organising team that worked hard to make this happen: Bart van Esch (course coordinator), Didi Sewüster and Eline Vrenken; all coordinators and teachers of the 25 different projects; over 100 Teaching Assistants that will supervise the different groups and all supporting staff in the labs, workshops and teacher support departments across the university.

Finally, best of luck to all the students participating in this course. I am really looking forward to seeing the innovative outcomes of these projects.
